Candid Commerce | The Swell Score

Welcome to Candid Commerce, a newsletter where I review customer journey’s of interesting eCommerce brands and brainstorm a (perhaps unconventional) go-to-market strategy for them.

Customer Journey Review:

Signup Forms:

  • Popups only show once.

  • No data collected in forms.

  • Requires SMS.

Product Pages:

  • Makes people click into a new tab to understand the product's return policy. Put all the information people need to start a purchase right on the product page for a better customer journey.

  • No graphics that show rather than explain where applicable.

Improvements:

  • Use a secondary signup form on product pages to increase subscribers & reduce drop-off.

  • Add data collection to forms to understand top purchase motivations by combining the answers with quantitative post-purchase data.

  • Should have a comparison for other products directly on product pages.

  • Use graphics to show key benefits instead of a bunch of text that explains features & benefits.

  • Collect SMS post-purchase, if at all.

Go-to-Market Strategy:

What are the products, why do they matter, why should people care:

  • Lab-tested Supplements.

  • They matter because many brands don’t have very stringent quality standards and end up selling lower quality versions of a compound.

  • People should care if they want to maximize the effects they expect from supplementation.

Market Dynamics: What is the market for/the main reasons people buy these products?

  • Health

  • Physical performance

Consumer Behaviors: How do people typically experience these products for the 1st time?

  • Social media

  • Online forums and Blogs

  • Fitness influencers

  • Browsing in-store

  • Chatting with dietitians/trainers/performance consultants

Aligning Market Dynamics & Consumer Behaviors with Market Inroads (AKA, “of the ways people experience new products, which can you list build into?”):

  • Independent dietitians & athletic trainers that recommend supplements to clients.

  • Bloggers who write about why not all versions of various supplements are created equal.

  • Influencers who talk about nutrition & overall health.
